Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opponent’s hoop or goal. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at each end, elevated to a height of 10 feet (3.05 meters). Players can advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while running) or passing it to teammates. Scoring occurs when a player successfully shoots the ball into the opposing team’s hoop, with different scoring values assigned to field goals and free throws.

Basketball emphasizes skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and defensive maneuvers. The game is governed by rules that dictate how players can move, score, and interact with one another. It is commonly played both recreationally and competitively, with professional leagues, such as the NBA (National Basketball Association) in the United States, showcasing some of the highest levels of skill in the sport. Basketball is known for its fast pace, athleticism, and teamwork, making it one of the most popular and widely played sports in the world.
